Open Your Heart with Pets, nearing completion

May 30, 2007 | 4:07 pm

From winter, to spring, to summer — and now “Open Your Heart with Pets” is near completion! Thank you to all the dog, cat, bird, horse, and other pet lovers who so generously contributed incredible stories about the pets in their lives and how these endearing animals helped to open their hearts.

Contributors, your stories are going to be in this book and with the entire “Open Your Heart” series being shared with a wider audience at BookExpo America this week in NYC, many in the publishing business and pet-loving readers are going to have the chance to read your contributions. I know they will be touched by what you have written.

There’s the story of Alison, a young medical student disabled by a serious illness, bed- and house-bound for years. She opened her heart to a parrot deemed unsuitable for being a pet, and her life and the parrot’s life were transformed.

Brandy was a dog whose owner survived homelessness as a result of a hurricane. She resettled in Ohio only to lose her dog when a visitor inadvertently left the garage door open. Eighty-eight days later, Brandy returned.

As with all the books in the series, I’ve had the pleasure of creating the Dreamies who inhabit the pages of these books, taking part in the various activities related to each title. In OYH Pets, I’ve also been granted the opportunity to include photographs, and they have come in from all over the country. Photos of birds, dogs, cats, horses…even a couple of special needs tortoises. Some talented photographers and enthusiastic memory makers have generously shared their photos for OYH Pets.

The director of the government’s Ready program shared with me steps for disaster preparedness with regard to pets and along with many books, internet sites, and useful forms in the book, I trust “Open Your Heart with Pets” will be a continuing resource after the inspiring stories are read.

Thank you, DreamTime Publishing, for the chance to share the incredible stories of pets who bring love and open-heartedness to our lives. Thank you, Meg Bertini, Publisher, for traveling to NY, manning the booth and spreading the word about the “Open Your Heart” series you so imaginatively created.

There are many stories and photographs within “Open Your Heart with Pets” and we can’t wait to see them in book form.
