Open Your Heart with Pets, nearing completion

May 30, 2007 | 4:07 pm

From winter, to spring, to summer — and now “Open Your Heart with Pets” is near completion! Thank you to all the dog, cat, bird, horse, and other pet lovers who so generously contributed incredible stories about the pets in their lives and how these endearing animals helped to open their hearts.

Contributors, your stories are going to be in this book and with the entire “Open Your Heart” series being shared with a wider audience at BookExpo America this week in NYC, many in the publishing business and pet-loving readers are going to have the chance to read your contributions. I know they will be touched by what you have written.

There’s the story of Alison, a young medical student disabled by a serious illness, bed- and house-bound for years. She opened her heart to a parrot deemed unsuitable for being a pet, and her life and the parrot’s life were transformed.

Brandy was a dog whose owner survived homelessness as a result of a hurricane. She resettled in Ohio only to lose her dog when a visitor inadvertently left the garage door open. Eighty-eight days later, Brandy returned.

As with all the books in the series, I’ve had the pleasure of creating the Dreamies who inhabit the pages of these books, taking part in the various activities related to each title. In OYH Pets, I’ve also been granted the opportunity to include photographs, and they have come in from all over the country. Photos of birds, dogs, cats, horses…even a couple of special needs tortoises. Some talented photographers and enthusiastic memory makers have generously shared their photos for OYH Pets.

The director of the government’s Ready program shared with me steps for disaster preparedness with regard to pets and along with many books, internet sites, and useful forms in the book, I trust “Open Your Heart with Pets” will be a continuing resource after the inspiring stories are read.

Thank you, DreamTime Publishing, for the chance to share the incredible stories of pets who bring love and open-heartedness to our lives. Thank you, Meg Bertini, Publisher, for traveling to NY, manning the booth and spreading the word about the “Open Your Heart” series you so imaginatively created.

There are many stories and photographs within “Open Your Heart with Pets” and we can’t wait to see them in book form.

Almost at Book Expo America!

| 12:54 pm

The countdown has begun. And I’ve already misplaced my identification badge and made two simultaneous appointments for Saturday, which means that we’re just about par for the course right now.

I have to publicly issue tremendous thanks to Steve Hultquist, who has volunteered to be the guest host of The World of Publishing while I’m away at the Bucharest Book Festival over the next two weeks. I interviewed Jules Kennedy (Open Your Heart with Singing) this past Monday and understand that Steve already has Elfreda Praetorius lined up for one of his two shows — well done, Steve, and please share the experience here!

Honestly, the most difficult thing about doing the show is, oddly enough, *remembering* it! Coming toward the end of the day as it does, I’ve often looked at a clock and realized, “Oh, no, I’m on in twenty minutes!” But that’s one of the good things about broadcasting from home…

The DreamTime authors are doing very well on the show and I’m proud of you all. And I’ll be very proud indeed to spend time at the DreamTime booth and tell others about you (and me!) as well.

I have no idea what kind of Internet connectivity I’ll have in Romania, so I may or may not be blogging next week. But I’ll be back ….!

BEA - The show where it all happens

| 10:54 am

In Booth #3148 Book Expo America is showcasing some really outstanding books. I’m happy to be a part of the “Open your heart series” but I hope you get a chance to view “Stop Struggling and Start Living” as well. It has been described as “the Self-help book everyone should read”, and has made a reputation for itself through phenomenal word of mouth sales. If you need more than just coming to view our above average books, then get this: we are giving away a trip to a luxury nudist resort as a prize! For details you will have to visit our booth.

Stop Struggling and Start Living, covers more ground than “The Secret” does. It also describes the other five Laws you should know about, and through an intriguing story tells about the origin of depression, how to stop blaming and numerous other things that will help you to finally take control of your life. Please come and visit us at Booth #3148 - BEA is buzzing!

Books, books, and more books!

May 24, 2007 | 6:55 pm

As Shelby said when she first heard about Book Expo, “it’s like going to Disney World.” And indeed it is if you’re into books and all things having to do with books. What is “it”?  Book Expo America, of course!  This year’s annual BEA trade show will be held in the Javits Center in Midtown Manhattan. I’ve heard that it’s a six-mile walk to cover the floor. What I’m not clear about is whether that’s in one direction, up and down the aisles, or what. But I guess I’ll find out!  *Everyone,* though, down to the last person, cautions about wearing comfortable shoes, so that might be my answer right there!

DreamTime Publishing is in Booth #3148 and, as Jeannette pointed out, we’re giving away a trip to a luxury clothing-optional resort in Florida. For details, check out our home page. The trip is valued at $600 and will make a great getaway or a terrific gift.  If you’re in NYC, come by and see us!

Book Expo America bound!

May 23, 2007 | 3:54 pm

It’s hard to believe that it’s almost here: Book Expo America, also known simply as BEA, the largest and most important of all the annual book shows in the States — and on the world stage, second only to the Frankfort Book Festival (where most foreign rights get sold). This year BEA is in NYC (how’s that for symmetry?) and looks to be exciting from a number of points of view.

The first and most important is, of course, Booth 3148 — DreamTime Publishing’s booth! I know that Meg and Shelby will be staffing it, but I expect to spend some time there as well, talking to whomever will listen about our absolutely terrific series that present the “why-to” of our various activities and hobbies. Can’t wait to see the cool t-shirts!

It’s an amazing expo, filled with publishers giving out freebies (some people bring boxes and ship all the “stuff” that they gather up directly home), lectures, seminars, meetings, and party after party after party. I have more invitations to parties than I’ll *ever* have time to attend! Networking, selling, and learning, all clustered together into three very busy days.

I’m actually leaving on Sunday, so I won’t be there for all of BEA, as my flight out of Boston is that evening — I’m heading to Bucharest, Romania, for *another* book show/festival there, so I’ll be doing a lot of the same sort of thing for at least a week, along with some author appearances (both at the Bucharest Book Fair and on Romanian television). Pretty amazing week, all in all.

But back to Book Expo America … DreamTime’s been given a wonderfully *different* gift to raffle off — a weekend at a clothing-optional resort in Land O’Lakes, Florida. Ha! Take that, Simon & Schuster! Dream on, St. Martin’s! Don’t you wish *you* had that, HarperCollins? Okay, so I’m kidding, but seriously it’s always a good way to attract people to one’s booth and one’s books, by giving away something that no one else is giving away. And the more people who know about DreamTime Publishing, the better!

Book Expo America runs from June 1 - June 3, with some seminars and other activities in the week leading up to it — which is *next* week. I’ll be sure to post pictures here so you can all see our booth, our publisher and marketing director, and the eager attendees flocking to buy our books!

All the Right Moves

May 17, 2007 | 1:59 pm

In any sport, the movement analysis skills of the coach can make or break an athlete. Here in Summit County Colorado, our coaches are so dedicated to movement analysis that some of them spend one night a week participating in a group to enhance their skills. Take a look:

Promoting my Book in P’Town

May 16, 2007 | 11:27 am

So, did you all miss me last week? I’ve been writing this blog every Wednesday for — well, it seems a little like forever, but it’s actually only been a few months; and I missed last Wednesday. Those of you following my column with bated breath were, no doubt, sorely disappointed.

Ego trip aside, I’ve been far too busy to geocache or even write about geocaching. Last week I attended and “covered,” in reporter-speak, the Biotechnology Industry Organization’s annual meeting at Boston’s bright new convention and exhibition center, surrounded by Boston’s bright new riot-control police, and bringing up more ethical questions than it answered. Yikes!

So I was delighted to make a long weekend of it and head down to Provincetown with Paul on Thursday. I did a fair amount of book promotion on the trip, “appearing” (so to speak) for the second time on WOMR to talk about it, securing placement at the Provincetown Bookshop, and getting a lot of viral marketing done at my local pub, the Squealing Pig. It was the bartender’s first mention in a book of any kind (I’d thanked him in the acknowledgments), and he was quick to share that milestone with other patrons.

I also spent some time at the library, where I donated a copy of the geocaching book and interviewed someone for the reading book and signed one of my novels that I happened to see on the shelf — a lot of hats to juggle, but P’Town is like Apple: everything *just works*.

But there’s geocaching on the horizon! We have plans to spend Saturday with Paul’s son Jacob, geocaching near his “other” home while his sister attends a Bat Mitzvah, so by next week I should have some great finds to report!

Until then …. remember to open your heart!

Visualize Whirled Skis

May 9, 2007 | 9:57 pm

Dreamtime author Steve Hultquist once started a conversation about “skiing in the theatre of your mind.” For years, athletes have used visualization as a tool to obtain their personal best. You can use it to enhance your skiing, or any other athletic skill. Read more here:
